The world of Magic: The Gathering is filled with powerful beings known as Planeswalkers, mages capable of traveling between different worlds, wielding immense magic, and shaping entire realities. This ability comes from a spark: a rare, innate source of magical power. However, despite their incredible abilities, Planeswalkers are not immortal.
Here are five notable Planeswalkers who died, along with who they were and how their stories ended.

Gideon Jura was a heroic and selfless Planeswalker known for his indestructible magic and strong sense of justice. Originally from the plane of Theros, he was a warrior who could magically protect himself and others, often placing himself in harm’s way to save lives.
He sacrificed himself during the War of the Spark. Facing the elder dragon Nicol Bolas, Gideon transferred his invulnerability onto Liliana Vess, saving her from certain death. This left him vulnerable, and he was struck down shortly after. His death remains one of the most noble sacrifices in the franchise.
Dack Fayden was known as the “greatest thief in the Multiverse." A clever and roguish Planeswalker, he specialized in stealing magical artifacts and outsmarting his enemies rather than overpowering them.
Dack also died during the War of the Spark. He was killed by the Eternals, magically enhanced undead soldiers controlled by Nicol Bolas. As he died, his spark was stolen—a haunting moment that showed even a Planeswalker’s core essence could be harvested.

Jaya Ballard was a powerful pyromancer (fire mage) with a bold personality and a sharp tongue. She had lived for centuries and was known for her mastery of fire magic and her rebellious attitude. She also served as a mentor to Chandra Nalaar, helping guide her control over her fiery powers.
Jaya died during the events of Dominaria United. She was killed by Ajani Goldmane after he had been corrupted by the Phyrexians, a terrifying faction made of both metal and organic matter that seeks to infect all living beings and transform them into what they consider “perfect.” Despite the betrayal, Jaya faced her end with defiance, staying true to her fiery spirit until the very end.

Urza is one of the most important figures in Magic’s history. A genius artificer and ancient Planeswalker, he spent centuries preparing to defeat the Phyrexians. He was incredibly intelligent but often cold and willing to make morally questionable decisions for the greater good. He also created Karn, an artificial being designed to help in the fight against Phyrexia.
Urza died during the Phyrexian Invasion of Dominaria. As part of a final plan to destroy the Phyrexian leader Yawgmoth, Urza allowed himself to be killed so his power could activate the Legacy Weapon, an incredibly powerful artifact. His death ultimately helped save Dominaria, though at a massive cost.

Jeska had one of the most complex stories in Magic. Originally a human woman, she became a Planeswalker after enduring immense trauma and transformation. She struggled with identity and power, at one point becoming the destructive being known as Phage.
Jeska’s story ends in sacrifice. She gave up her life to help restore balance and prevent further destruction caused by powerful forces on Dominaria. Her death marked the end of a long and painful journey, one driven by loss, redemption, and ultimately, peace.

Even in a universe full of near-godlike power, these stories show that Planeswalkers are still vulnerable. Their deaths often come at pivotal moments, shaping entire worlds and conflicts. Whether it’s Gideon’s selfless sacrifice, Dack’s sudden end, or Urza’s calculated final plan, each of these moments raises the stakes of the story and gives real weight to the battles being fought across the Multiverse.
