Discover the five Praetors of New Phyrexia in Magic: The Gathering: legendary beings who embody twisted ideals of perfection through each color of mana, shaping one of the game’s most chilling factions.

In the vast multiverse of Magic: The Gathering, few factions are as terrifying, or as philosophically intriguing, as the Phyrexians. Twisted by a doctrine of "perfection through compleation," New Phyrexia is ruled by five powerful beings known as Praetors. Each represents one of the five colors of mana, embodying not just a strategy, but an ideology. Together, they form one of the most compelling villainous pantheons in the game’s lore.
Let’s take a closer look at the five Praetors and what makes each of them uniquely terrifying.
Elesh Norn is the fanatical leader of New Phyrexia and the embodiment of white mana taken to its most extreme. Where white typically represents order, unity, and structure, Elesh Norn twists these ideals into rigid conformity and absolute control. She believes in a unified Phyrexia where all beings are "perfected" under her vision. Her porcelain mask and cathedral-like aesthetic reinforce her godlike authority. Under her rule, individuality is not just discouraged—it is eradicated.

If Elesh Norn is the face of faith, Jin-Gitaxias is the mind of Phyrexia. Representing blue mana, he is obsessed with knowledge, experimentation, and evolution, no matter the cost. Jin-Gitaxias conducts horrific experiments in pursuit of perfection, viewing living beings as raw material. His laboratories are places of unimaginable suffering, where science is unbound by ethics. To him, perfection is not divine, it is engineered.

Sheoldred embodies black mana’s hunger for power, ambition, and manipulation. Unlike the rigid structure of Elesh Norn or the cold logic of Jin-Gitaxias, Sheoldred thrives in shadows and schemes. She commands through fear and deception, orchestrating betrayals and power plays within Phyrexia’s hierarchy. Her faction values dominance and self-interest, making her both a powerful ally and a dangerous enemy.

Urabrask is the outlier among the Praetors. As the representative of red mana, he values freedom, individuality, and instinct, traits that clash with Phyrexia’s core philosophy. Unlike the others, Urabrask does not force compleation upon unwilling subjects. His domain, the Furnace Layer, operates with a surprising level of autonomy. While still undeniably Phyrexian, Urabrask’s approach suggests that even within a hive of conformity, sparks of independence can survive.

Vorinclex is the embodiment of green mana’s primal instincts—growth, survival, and the natural order, twisted into brutal predation. He believes in a version of perfection achieved through strength and adaptation. Weakness is culled without hesitation, and only the strongest are worthy of survival. Vorinclex is less concerned with ideology and more with instinct. He doesn’t manipulate or preach, he hunts, consumes, and evolves.

Though they serve the same overarching goal of Phyrexian perfection, the Praetors are far from united. Each one interprets "perfection" differently, leading to internal conflict and philosophical tension.
This dynamic is what makes them so fascinating. They are not just villains, they are embodiments of extreme ideologies, each pushing their color of mana to its breaking point.
